For the first time in the 17 seasons of "Hard Knocks," the Detroit Lions will be the subject of HBO's popular sports documentary show.

With the Lions being the subject of the preseason edition of "Hard Knocks," HBO's show has officially documented all eight of the NFL's divisions. The Packers, Vikings and Bears all have yet to make an appearance on the show. No team has been featured more than the Cowboys, who have appeared as the subjects three times.

The Lions have been frequently picked as a sleeper team in 2022 following a standout NFL draft, some impressive second-half performances and the fiery Dan Campbell coaching the team in his second season.

In the buildup to the 2022 NFL season, NFL fans will get to see behind the scenes at the Lions' camp as they build up to their much-anticipated season.

'Hard Knocks' preview: Season 17

Are the Lions everyone's favorite sleeper in the NFL right now?

Despite finishing 2021 with the second-worst record in the NFL at 3-13-1, there is optimism brewing in Detroit that the Lions could be on the rise. During the final six games of the season, rookie wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown broke out with 560 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 51 receptions. In his final five games of 2021, quarterback Jared Goff completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 1,136 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and five picks.

A well-regarded draft and the return of key players like St. Brown, D'Andre Swift and T.J. Hockenson has many believing in the Lions in 2022. Detroit nabbed Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson with the second overall pick and later traded up with the Vikings to select Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams to put together one of the most exciting first rounds in the draft.

In free agency, the Lions signed wide receiver D.J. Chark to a one-year deal to round out the top weapons for Goff as Swift, St. Brown, Williams, Chark and Hockenson, and they improved the defense after it allowed the second-most points and fourth-most total yards a season ago.

Can this team break out the way many expect? "Hard Knocks" will cover their journey to the start of the 2022 NFL season.
