When was the last time the Canadiens owned the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft?

For the first time in over 40 years, the Canadiens own the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft.

Montreal won the draft lottery Tuesday, gaining the top selection and likely becoming the new home for Shane Wright, the consensus No. 1 prospect in the July draft.

This is the sixth time the Canadiens have had the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft; the last came in 1980. They will be the first team since Toronto in 1985 to host the draft and have the first overall selection.

The Canadiens had a horrific 2021-22 season. After making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final last season, the club ended the year with the worst record in the league. It was a painful season in Montreal, but now they club has been awarded the opportunity to select a franchise player in Wright.

NHL MOCK DRAFT 2022: Canadiens take Shane Wright with No. 1 pick

The 2022 NHL Draft will take place July 7-8 at Bell Centre in Montreal.

When was the last time the Canadiens had the No. 1 pick?

The last time the Canadiens were the first team to draft was in 1980 when Montreal elected to take Doug Wickenheiser. It was the fifth time in Canadiens history that the club owned the No. 1 pick. It obtained the selection in a 1976 trade with the Colorado Rockies.

Most notable is the Canadiens' selection of Guy Lafleur with the first selection in 1971, a pick that was acquired in a 1970 trade with the California Golden Seals. Lafleur went on to have a legendary career with Montreal, winning five Stanley Cups with the team.
