Saatva Classic Mattress Video Review

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress that cushions sleepers with a 3-inch pillow top above dual-coil layers. For those looking for a customizable mattress shopping experience, the Saatva Classic comes in three firmness levels: Plush Soft (3 on the 1-to-10 firmness scale), Luxury Firm (5 to 7), and Firm (8). Professional reviews mention the Plush Soft or Luxury Firm to be a good match with side sleepers or lightweight sleepers, while the Luxury Firm or Firm could be the best option for stomach and back sleepers or heavier people.

To see the best options for heavier sleepers, see our guide to the Best Mattresses for Heavy People 2022.

Shoppers also have the option of choosing from different heights when buying a Saatva Classic. The mattress comes in 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch versions. The 14.5-inch option is the tallest mattress in our rating this year while the 11.5-inch height is quite typical compared to the other mattresses that made our list.

The Classic comes in two different height options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. This is the 11.5-inch version.(USN&WR)

Couples interested in a mattress that limits motion transfer could find a better match in another highly ranked mattress from our analysis, the all-foam Tuft & Needle Mint. While the Saatva’s upper pillowtop will assist with some motion isolation, it’s not likely to provide as much as a memory foam mattress. The Plush Soft is the softest Saatva Classic with a conforming upper comfort layer, but it isn’t as body-hugging as some other memory foam mattresses.

Anyone looking for strong edge support could be impressed by the Saatva Classic’s construction. The Saatva’s two coil layers are encased in a durable, high-density foam, giving it strong edge support. Those who like extra support when getting in and out of bed or anyone who sits on the edge of the bed often could find this to be a benefit of the Saatva Classic.

The Saatva Classic could also provide a cool night’s sleep for anyone who often wakes up feeling overheated. Thanks to its innerspring construction, the mattress naturally allows air to pass through, rather than getting trapped. Professional reviews agree that the design of the mattress and its breathable cotton cover could be great for hot sleepers.

The Saatva’s dual coil layers provide responsive support while the Euro-top adds softness. Combined, these serve as pressure-relieving elements in the mattress that could be ideal for those dealing with back pain. Experts also agree the Luxury Firm and Firm versions often provide ideal lumbar support, while the Plush Soft is best suited for side sleepers.

The tufted mattress top is made of breathable organic cotton.(USN&WR)

The Saatva Classic comes with a 180-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty. Saatva also offers free white-glove delivery, and they’ll haul away your old mattress and foundation at no additional charge.

What Is the Saatva Classic Mattress Made Of?

The Classic mattress is made with two layers of coils, as well as memory foam and organic cotton.(USN&WR)

The Saatva Classic innerspring mattress is made with four layers of ultra-premium materials with a coil-on-coil construction that’s designed to help resist sagging over the years. The 3-inch comfort layer is treated with Saatva’s proprietary Guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment, which is engineered to keep the mattress hygienic and free of mold and bacteria. The dual coil layers on the Saatva Classic are encased in a high-density foam that professional reviewers say makes this mattress excel in edge support.

The most-popular firmness option is Luxury Firm, which has a firmness rating of 5 to 7.(USN&WR)

The Saatva Classic comes in two height options: an 11.5-inch version, and a 14.5-inch version for those looking for a taller mattress.

Saatva Classic Mattress vs. The WinkBed

The WinkBed Mattress(USN&WR)

Sleepers looking for a luxury mattress could be looking at both the Saatva Classic and the WinkBed. While the Saatva is an innerspring mattress with a pillowtop above dual coil layers, the WinkBed is a hybrid with a gel-infused foam layer on top of coils. Both have several firmness levels to choose from but Saatva offers an 11.5-inch height compared to the 13.5-inch Winkbed, making it appealing to shoppers looking for a lower profile bed.

The WinkBed is a bed-in-a-box that will arrive at your doorstep rolled and compressed, whereas the Saatva Classic comes with white glove delivery. This means your mattress will be delivered and set up in your home. If you’re not interested in hauling a mattress into your bedroom, the Saatva could be the more convenient option. Saatva gives customers a 180-night sleep trial, while the WinkBed comes with a 120-night trial. One notable downside to the Saatva is the $99 processing fee that comes with returning the mattress.

Saatva Classic Mattress vs. Casper Original Hybrid

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress(Casper)

The Casper Original Hybrid earns the highest ranking in our analysis with a score of 4.2 out of 5, placing it at No. 1 overall on the Best Mattresses of 2021 list. The Saatva Classic scores a 4.0 and ties at No. 4 on our Best Mattresses of 2022 list. Both are designed with construction and materials to help sleepers remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Stomach or back sleepers who feel most comfortable on a firmer mattress might find a better match with the Saatva’s Luxury Firm or Firm version. The Casper Original Hybrid has two layers of softer foam above its firm base, which could be a better match for those who prefer the body-hugging feel of a memory foam mattress.

Shoppers looking for a split king or a split California king will find those sizes offered in the Saatva Classic, but not with the Casper Original Hybrid.

Saatva also sells several all-foam mattresses including:

  • Loom & Leaf
  • Zenhaven
  • Modern Foam

Additionally, there are two hybrid options: the Latex Hybrid and the Saatva HD. The HD is designed for heavier sleepers. Saatva sells a youth bed, a crib mattress, and an adjustable air bed – the Solaire – as well.

You can buy a Saatva mattress online from the company website. If you’d like to see or try the mattress in-person first, Saatva also operates viewing rooms in the following cities:

  • New York
  • Washington, D.C.
  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • Boston
  • Chicago

If you live in the contiguous U.S., Saatva includes free in-home delivery with your mattress purchase. Though this type of service is common among mattress companies, it typically costs an extra fee. Residents of Alaska and Hawaii are not eligible for this service, though Saatva can still ship to them via freight forwarder.

How long does a Saatva mattress last?

Saatva Warranty: 15-year warranty

Saatva offers different warranties for each product, but its flagship model, the Saatva Classic, has a 15-year warranty. This warranty does not cover mattress defects caused by normal wear and tear. It also excludes damage caused by the customer or by the use of an improper foundation. If the mattress is found to be defective, Saatva will replace your mattress for free during the first two years of the warranty, and repair the issues found after two years for a $99 processing fee which covers pickup and delivery.

If you would rather not pay this fee, you could take advantage of Saatva’s Fairness Replacement Option. If you find your mattress to be defective, you can purchase a new mattress from Saatva at a significant discount and keep the original mattress. The discount varies depending on how old your original Saatva mattress is.

Saatva’s warranties vary as well, with the Crib Mattress only covered for 10 years, and the Solaire covered for 25 years. Among the mattress brands in our rating, 10-year warranties are the most common.

How do I return a Saatva mattress?

Saatva Trial Period: 180-Day Sleep Trial

If you decide to return your Saatva mattress, contact customer service during the trial period and Saatva will make arrangements for pickup. The purchase price will be fully refunded, though you should note that Saatva charges a $99 fee to cover the cost of labor and pickup. Saatva will donate your used mattress when possible.

Saatva notes that the most common reason for an exchange or return is that buyers want a different mattress height, so it recommends that you measure the height of your frame and foundation before ordering your mattress.

How long does it take to set up a Saatva mattress?

As part of Saatva’s free white glove service, a delivery team will set up the mattress for you. The company will schedule a four-hour window for delivery on a date of your choosing. You can also arrange to have your old mattress and foundation removed.

You won’t need to wait for the mattress to expand before using it. Unlike a mattress in a box, Saatva mattresses are not compressed and rolled up for shipping. However, Saatva notes that the materials in the mattress may take a few days to soften.

Do Saatva mattresses smell?

As the Classic is primarily composed of innersprings, it shouldn't off-gas. The mattress’s thin layer of memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that it contains low quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Saatva says the Classic doesn't off-gas harmful chemicals, and any odor of the new mattress will dissipate in a few days or weeks. The mattress company says this also applies to its other mattresses, including its all-foam Loom & Leaf, with no additional off-gassing occurring when the mattress arrives in your home.

Do Saatva mattresses need a box spring?

No, Saatva mattresses don’t require a box spring or foundation. Saatva says its mattresses work well with most foundations, including box springs, platform beds with slats that are 4 inches apart or less, and adjustable bases. Using a foundation is helpful for airflow or if you want to raise the height of your mattress. Check the fine print of the mattress warranty for details on using frames and foundations.

Saatva says that because the Classic has a pillow top, a thick mattress pad is unnecessary, though the company says you can use a breathable mattress protector to guard against spills and stains.
